Jericoacoara has a very special geographic position, since it is the furthest north spot of the coast of the state of Ceará, with sea to the east and to the west side, being one of the few continental beaches of Brazil where it is possible to see both sunrise and sunset in the sea, as well as moonrise and moonset. This special geographic position is also what makes it one of the windiest places in the world. At sunset, it is tradition to watch the sunset from a big sand dune on the west side of the village, called Sunset Dune. Everyday, after the sunset, you can watch the capoeristas practising their art at the base of the dune (capoeira is a typical fight/dance, created by the African people brought to South America during the slave trade).

Among the several attractions, the most famous is the Arched Rock, a huge gate of stone sculpted by the waves, situated in the Rocky Region of Jericoacoara.

        Jericoacoara

Jericoacoara is a beach located in the Northeast of Brazil, close to the equator, in the state of Ceará. It was an isolated fishing village, until about 20 years ago, without any contact with modern civilization. There were no roads, no electricity, no phones, no TV’s, no newspapers, and money was something never used, since deals were made by trading fish for goods.

In 1984 the place was declared an "Environment Protection Area" by federal law. It was first discovered by backpackers and adventurous travellers. In 1994, the North-American newspaper "Washington Post Magazine" chose Jericoacoara as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches of the world, in a special holiday issue. Since then, the small fishing village has been slowly developing. Thanks to all the building limitations imposed by the environment protection laws, you will not find big buildings or hotels.

Although tourism has reached the place, it still keeps the unhurried and peaceful way of life. Every day you watch the traditional fishermen head out to sea, and the sea is the best place in Brazil for windsurfers and kitesurfers, the water temperature is very good, and winds average 25 knots almost every day.
