       Serrekunda - the City

The Gambia's largest town is Serrekunda, grown from a small village (its name means 'the home of the Sere family'), and now is the primary transport hub and activity centre of the country.

City's bustling life and crowds can be a bit of a shocker for a tourist coming from coast resorts. Main roads through the city are just being built so traffic was slow at times, and night time it was adventure since there are no streetlights.

The streets are lined with shops, stores, stalls and merchants of every cast. But once you've arrived, a stroll around the town centre or its thriving main market - in reality, the town is one big market and you should learn to bargain! - is highly recommended for a taste of the real Gambia.
